I was just wondering.....

I know this is a knitting blog but I have been pondering something and I need to get it off my chest. I know there are people out in the world that celebrate Christmas but don't believe in God or Jesus Christ. My question is this: If you don't believe that Jesus was born, and he was the Son of God, why would you celebrate Christmas? Is it just for the gift giving/getting thing? Why not celebrate Hanukkah? For Hanukkah you get to open presents for eight nights in a row. I know that I live in a free country and people are free to celebrate whatever they want, in the way that they want. I just don't get the whole concept of celebrating a Christian holiday if you don't believe in Jesus Christ. I may have offended some readers, (I actually don't even know if I have that many) and I don't mean to offend anyone. I am just curious about this. I am truly not trying to sound judgemental, it is just something that I needed to write about. Any comments would be welcome. THANKS!

I'm off to try and finish those darn socks!! Happy knitting!

I've been reading, just not commenting. Just thought I'd give you my answer, though I don't speak for anyone but myself. I'm not Christian, but I celebrate Christmas mostly as tradition. My family always has a Christmas Eve party when I see people that I may not see the rest of the year including my Grandma's one guaranteed trip of the year. Ok, the gifts are nice (I won't lie) but they aren't that important to me. I love the sight of a tree lit up in the dark, I love the spirit of giving and charity. I don't know that much about it, but I've heard that most Christmas traditions were around before Christianity anyway.

Good question, I'm always up for a civilized discussion. Hope you aren't getting frostbite. It's starting to get cold around here.

We've never really been religious in my family - I was baptized and made my confession, but we don't go to church and Pea and I were married by a Justice of the Peace because we didn't want to be hypocrites and have a big church wedding if we never go to church. Anyway, we always celebrate Christmas - for the same reasons your last commenter left. For us, it's more about family and love and tradition. There just seems to be a special magic at Christmas time, even though we don't honor religious traditions. Like you, we respect everyone's own beliefs and rights to celebrate in their own way - and we try very hard to be respectful of the way each person celebrates. You know, I never really thought about all of this until now - thanks for helping me think about what Christmas means to me!!

I am Christian and have another idea - all this hype and madness gets to me. I propose the world go to a bi-yearly gift giving tradition and that we celebrate the true meaning every year.

I have many non-Christian immigrant employees. They like the Santa aspect and the magic that it brings to their families. I asked them if they are offended by my calling our annual party a Christmas party. Their response is that if I moved to their country of origin they wouldn't change their traditions for me.

Just some thoughts to throw into the mix.
